Career and family: Are the two possible to balance?

If you are a working parent, you may visualise a well-balanced set of scales with work on one side, and family life on the other. The reality is often in stark contrast to this image. Balance seems to be that far-off destination we simply never get to.

Advancements in technology, crises around the world, and the pandemic situation have blurred the boundaries between family and work. It is definitely handy that we can carry our laptop with us wherever we go and stay connected from anywhere, but this also means that we are emailed, messaged, called and generally expected to be available at all hours.

It is only a matter of time before you realise that you cannot fit all your family and work commitments into your schedule daily.

The scales are tipping… Recognise the red flags

You know that your work/life balance is being tipped out of balance when you:

  • Bring your work home with you

  • Tend to cancel family plans or friend gatherings because work is busy

  • Have trouble sleeping and have work-related dreams

  • Have conflicts with family members who claim you are “always working”

  • Experience headaches, anxiety, tension, stomach aches

  • Find it difficult to relax and be fully present with family

  • Feel irritable or unhappy

  • Feel increased resentment towards various areas of life

If unhealthy patterns such as these continue for long periods, you may start feeling helpless, unmotivated, and stuck. It is therefore important to employ self-care strategies to ensure your physical and mental well-being, and to maintain some control.

Self-care… It’s more than just a beauty routine

In times of pressure and stress, it is so easy to skip your exercise session; to eat fast foods rather than a healthy, nourishing meal; and to miss out on extra, needed, hours of sleep. The key is to try and incorporate all the things that are good for you into your daily routine – it is what will keep your mind and body nourished and energised.

Make it a rule that, once you are home with the family, you will not check your work emails and messages every time your phone or laptop chimes. Detach from your technological devices and instead, engage in family activities – cook a meal together, play a board game, go for a walk with your partner and kids after dinner. Establishing clear boundaries, and sticking to them, is extremely important in maintaining the balance.

Prioritise wisely

It is normal that while focusing on one aspect of life, the other areas may suffer a little. This does not mean that it will remain so. Be kind to yourself and remember that everything has a season, and will pass. Set your priorities in order and stick to clear objectives – do not try to manage everything at the same time. Once one goal is achieved, you can move on to the next, all while implementing self-care techniques, and giving enough time to family and friends.

Maintaining the balance

We all have to make compromises in life – we do not live a fairy tale existence in which everything magically falls into place.

If you have tried numerous techniques to live a balanced life and still feel as though you are spreading yourself thin, then it may help to talk with a therapist.
